IAN DAWSON

IAN DAWSON

THE ARTIST

Ian Dawson (British), channels a vibrant dialogue with various material practices into his dynamic sculptures. Crafted from 3D printing, his artworks form a colourful explosion, perpetually in flux, submerging the physical and digital realms. Dawson's recent works incorporate non-petroleum biomaterials, merging them with Mesolithic archaeological forms.

Collaborating with archaeologists and diverse communities worldwide, Dawson's art bridges old and new making forms. Reflecting on the past and present, his work envisions a future repairing connections between material practices and cultures. This is personified through pieces such as ‘Deserae Tailfeathers’ which was made in collaboration with Native Americans Deserae Tailfeathers, Sharon TailFeathers, Christine Clark at The University of Lethbridge, Canada.

By connecting forms across human material culture, Dawson's mutant sculptures challenge accepted notions of 'natural' and 'artificial,' prompting philosophical inquiries into the unknown world and human-object interactions.

Notable Accolades: Described by Gavin Turk as 'awe-inspiring' in Frieze Magazine, Dawson's work is celebrated for its exploratory, playful, and raw power. With extensive global exhibitions, including New York, London, and Paris, Dawson's works grace public and private collections. Exhibitions include James Cohan Gallery, (New York and London), Tate Modern, (London), Napoleon Gardens, Holland Park, (London), Archimede Staffolini Gallery, (Cyprus), Gallerie Xippas, (Paris), Habitat, Kings Road, (London), Flowers Gallery, (London), Christie's Multiplied Art Fair, and DURDEN AND RAY, (Los Angeles), Thames-Side Studios Gallery, (London) Featured in publications on contemporary sculpture and collage, his book "Making Contemporary Sculpture" explores the intricate relationship between artist and creative act. As co-programme leader of MASS Sculpture Programme and co-director of The Material Lab at Winchester School of Art, Dawson actively contributes to social sculpture.
