GERHARD RICHTER

GERHARD RICHTER

THE ARTIST

Gerhard Richter, (German, born 1932), is widely regarded as one of the greatest living artists. Renowned for his remarkable versatility, Richter seamlessly moves between abstraction and photorealism, often blending the two to challenge the boundaries of visual perception and representation.

Richter’s work is defined by his exploration of different styles and techniques. His photorealistic paintings, like "Betty" and "Lesende", exhibit meticulous detail and a hauntingly lifelike quality. In contrast, his abstract pieces, such as "Abstraktes Bild" series, showcase his masterful use of colour, texture, and form, creating dynamic and emotionally resonant compositions.

One of his most famous methods is the squeegee technique, where he drags a large blade across the canvas, blending and revealing layers of paint in his work. This approach allows Richter to engage with the unpredictability and fluidity of the creative process.
