BARKLEY HENDRICKS

THE ARTIST

Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017), an American painter born in Philadelphia, is famed for his vibrant and stylish portraits that captured the essence of Black identity and culture. His work stands out for its striking realism, vivid colour palettes, and the confident, dynamic presence of his subjects, often set against monochromatic backgrounds.

Hendricks’ portraits, like "Icon for My Man Superman (Superman Never Saved Any Black People - Bobby Seale)" and "Lawdy Mama," are renowned as iconic works that epitomise the individuality and fashion of his subjects. He often painted life-sized, full-body portraits that challenge traditional representations and assert the dignity and elegance of Black Americans.

Known for his masterful use of oil paint and mixed media, Hendricks combined elements of Classical Portraiture with Contemporary Themes, bridging the gap between old and new. His work not only highlights his subjects' style and personality but also serves as a powerful commentary on race, identity, and representation in art.
